Active Travel: Safe Routes to School - Dominican College Sion Hill, Blackrock

Overview

A rendering of a streetscape in front of Dominican College, showing a cyclist in the foreground, students walking toward the school entrance, and flags flying along the perimeter fence.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is working with the National Transport Authority (NTA) to deliver the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme. The programme aims to make it safer and easier for children to walk, cycle and get to school.

As part of the programme, "School Zones" will be created outside schools. These improvements will:

  • Reduce traffic outside school gates.

  • Encourage drivers to slow down near schools.

  • Reduce car drop-offs, pick-ups and engine idling at school gates.

  • Make drivers more aware that children are using the area.

  • Create cleaner, safer and more welcoming streets and public spaces.

A School Zone is proposed for Dominican College Sion Hill, Cross Avenue, Blackrock, Co.Dublin.

What is proposed at Dominican College Sion Hill?

A 2023 parent survey showed strong support for safety improvements outside both schools, with more than 9 in 10 parents supporting measures to make it safer and easier for children to walk and cycle to school.

The proposals include:

  • Safer walking and cycling routes near the school entrance.

  • A new zebra crossing and other crossing improvements.

  • Measures to slow down traffic near the school.

  • Markings and signs to make drivers more aware of the School Zone.

  • Improved footpaths at nearby side roads to make walking easier and safer.

  • New planting and public realm improvements to improve the area around the school.

  • Relocation of the bus set-down area further east of the school.

  • The design follows the National Transport Authority's Safe Routes to School guidance.
