Active Travel: Safe Routes to School - Our Lady's Girl's & Boy's National School, Ballinteer

Overview

A person cycles down a quiet street near a school, with colorful circles painted on the road surface.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is working with the National Transport Authority (NTA) to deliver the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme. The programme aims to make it safer and easier for children to walk, cycle and get to school.

As part of the programme, "School Zones" will be created outside schools. These improvements will:

  • Reduce traffic outside school gates.

  • Encourage drivers to slow down near schools.

  • Reduce car drop-offs, pick-ups and engine idling at school gates.

  • Make drivers more aware that children are using the area.

  • Create cleaner, safer and more welcoming streets and public spaces.

A School Zone is proposed for Our Lady’s Girls’ and Boys’ National School, Ballinteer, Co. Dublin.

What is proposed at Our Lady’s Girls & Boys National School?

A survey of parents carried out in 2023 showed strong support for safety improvements outside both schools. More than 9 out of 10 parents supported measures to improve safety and make it easier for children to walk and cycle.

The proposals include:

  • Safer walking routes near both school entrances.

  • New and improved walking and cycling facilities, including separate routes where possible.

  • Measures to slow down traffic near the schools.

  • Improvements outside the Girls’ National School on Ballinteer Avenue, including a continuous footpath across the entrances to the petrol station and church car park.

  • Similar improvements outside the Boys’ National School on Broadford Rise to make walking safer, improve visibility and create a more welcoming school entrance.

  • A raised zebra crossing outside the school.

  • Traffic calming and junction improvements on nearby roads.

  • New or upgraded zebra crossings at school crossing points, where appropriate.

  • Planting, landscaping and other improvements to make the area safer and more attractive.
