A New Teen Space in Loughlinstown

Feedback updated 16 Apr 2026

We asked

On the 28th October 2025, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council invited the public to make submissions regarding two new proposed play spaces in Loughlinstown Linear Park, Dublin 18. One play space is proposed for children and the other is for teenagers (a “teen space”).

This public consultation survey ran from 28th October until 16th December 2025. The feedback received is now feeding into a brief and specification for the Play and Teen spaces, which will be tendered for construction during 2026.

The aims of the consultation were to:

  • Determine the main users of the Children and Teen Spaces
  • Determine the level of support for both play spaces
  • Gather ideas from the local community for both play spaces

There were 82 responses to the Citizen Space Survey for the Loughlinstown Linear Park Childrens’ Play Space.   90% of the responses were supportive of the proposals.

There were 68 responses to the Citizen Space Survey for the Loughlinstown Linear Park Teen Space.   67% of the responses were supportive of the proposals.

We did

The surveys for each play space have been analysed and the summary of the findings are within the attached reports. These reports will be included within the tender documents, and it is essential that the most desired play elements for both play spaces will be included within the designs. Thus, the ideas and views of the local community will influence both designs.

We will provide further updates on these play spaces through the DLR website in due course.

Overview

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is planning to build a new space for young people to chill out and socialise (a teen space) in Loughlinstown Linear Park.

The dlr Play Policy 2023-2028 has highlighted the need for both a new children’s play space and an outdoor fitness space in Loughlinstown Linear Park and the fitness space may comprise part of a new teen space. The dlr Parks and Landscape Services is asking residents in Loughlinstown and those residents who regularly use Loughlinstown Park to complete this questionnaire in the link below to share their views and ideas on the proposed teen space. We will also be running a similar survey for a proposed children's natural play space nearby. If you are interested in that, please visit here to view the survey for it.

In recent years local authorities in the Dublin metropolitan area have built teen spaces with features where local teenagers prefer to meet their friends and ‘hang out’ in a safe environment. Below are a few examples:

Example 1:Meadowbrook, DLRCC

Example 2: Collinstown Park, Neilstown, SDCC

Example 3 – Griffeen Valley Park, SDCC

The map below shows the proposed location for the teen space in Loughlinstown Linear Park:

The teen space will include new equipment as well as additional planting to make it a pleasant inviting space.

Submissions can be made by filling in the online survey below, by email to parksconcultations@dlrcoco.ie or in writing. Written submissions can be posted or submitted in person to Parks Department, County Hall, 2 Marine Rd, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, A96 K6C9. There will also be a creative workshop held with local teenagers in Loughlinstown to get their ideas and preferences for the design of the teen space.

The results of this survey will be published on the Council’s citizen participation website. If you have any further queries please email parksconsultations@dlrcoco.ie.

Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to complete the questionnaire.
